2007 Top ARCite Award: Nominations & Result

In 1974, Bill Stahl, one of the ARC’s founding members, designed, built and donated the Top ARCite Award for the purpose of recognizing the ARC member who contributed the most to the ARC during the past year (2007). This award will be won only once by an individual.

Past Top ARCite winners include: Doris Millet; John Millet; Dorothea Gruenerwald; Ann Maurer; Barbara Hoard; Katherine Evans; Jane Pampalone; Ruth Twiss; Jan Marshall; Catherine Thompson; Dorothy Stringer; Mary Stringer; Doris Baldwin; Robert Hogan; Kay Peltier; Pat Flood; Barbara Koon; Gwen Chaney; Jean Forster; Peter Piusz; Mrs. Bernard Freeman; Doreen Le Page; Denise Gross; Marilyn Piusz; Linda Michels; Donna Rice; Greg Benkiser; Connie Fountain; Joanne Thatcher; Judi Wilson; Glenn Elizabeth Pollock; Lew Olson, Pamela J. Grant.

Nominees Were:

  • I would like to nominate Grace Acosta for Top ARCite Award for 2007. I have known Grace for 3 years through Gulfstream Guardian Angels Rottweiler Rescue and Gulfstream Rottweiler Club in which she is President of both. I am not a breeder but an ordinary person and have been in love with the Rottweiler for 25 years. I found that same love of the breed in Grace, who keeps me coming back to meetings and participating in the ‘dog world.’

Grace has earned my respect through her hard work and dedication to the breed. While she took on the tremendous task of being the ARC 2007 National Show Chairmanship, she continued her efforts for Rottweilers in rescue, breeding, therapy, education, and fundraising. Other organizations that benefited from Grace’s leadership during 2007 included the South Dade Kennel Club, Medallion Rottweiler Club, and Miami Dog Club.

Unfortunately, in 2007 she lost the love of her life, Twice Select AKC Champion Acosta Mobster’s Bandido Bueno, TT, RTD, CGC. Bandido was special because of Grace. Despite her loss, she never failed meet her ARC duties and be there for her canine and human friends. I highly recommend Grace for this most prestigious award.
    Nominated by Victoria C. Wiltsie
  • Janet Fletcher has worked tirelessly for the Rottweiler breed this past year through numerous activities. She accepted the big job of Trophy Chair for the 2007 ARC National Specialty. Additionally, she worked closely with me as the show chair on other show tasks and was always available when needed. During the week of the specialty, she was up early each morning and worked late each evening until things were setup for the next day.

Janet takes an active role in Rottweiler Rescue. She currently houses an owner surrendered, male Rottweiler with vitiligo. She frequently participates in rescue runs not only for Rottweilers but other breeds as well.

Janet owned ARC’s first Top Twenty Winner and has a strong passion for the event. She worked diligently this past year as a member of the Top Twenty Committee to assist in its re-establishment in a format that is workable and equitable.

As show chair for her local all-breed club, she had a member of the Florida House of Representatives present their trophies. This was excellent public relations and a positive step toward preventing anti-canine legislation from passing in the future.

These are a few of many reasons I consider Janet Fletcher worthy of being awarded the Top ARCite Award for 2007.
    Nominated by Grace Acosta
  • Janet Fletcher is the “energizer bunny” for the Rottweiler. She was the trophy chair for the 2007 ARC National Specialty. It is an enormous job to know how many trophies, medallions, and rosettes will be needed for an event with so many different venues. Janet already had eight years of experiences as Trophy Chair for the Seminole Rottweiler Club of Greater Tallahassee. She also typed our specialty catalog and prepared many of the ads appearing in it; then, she printed and physically put it together. She is also our club Secretary.

Additionally, Janet opened per personal property to host an AKC sanctioned Rottweiler Specialty B-OB Match and again to host a two-day event for the American Temperament Test Society, Inc. Sixty five dogs were temperament tested with the majority of them being Rottweilers.

Janet has participated in many Rottweiler Rescue runs which carry over to the other breeds. She houses rescues when needed and currently has an older Rottweiler male rescue.

As show chair for her local all-breed club, Janet too the initiative to have a Florida State Legislator present their Group trophies and Best In Show trophy. Having our legislators see who we are and what we do is essential in our fight to protect our breed from anti-dog legislation.

Janet’s activities at the national, state and local levels certainly attest to her dedication to the Rottweiler.
    Nominated by Betty O’Hara
  • Diane Garnett is our nominee for Top ARCite. Diane has served now for almost 2 years as President and has done an outstanding job. She has worked tirelessly in trying to “heal” the club over the tail issue, toward BSL issues, the Bylaws revision, etc. She has also done a lot for the club in past years as well; having served as ARC Secretary for several years and as Show Chairman and Committee Chairman/member at several National Specialties.
Nominated by Marilyn & Peter Piusz
  • We would like to nominate Tracy Parciak for the Top ARCite Award. Tracy has wanted to give up her “job” as ARK Editor for some time now. However, rather than leave ARC without an Editor, she continues in that very, very time-consuming position because no one else has stepped forward to take her place. And she has done an outstanding job. In the past, Tracy has also served as a Director and the 2005 National Show Chairman.
Nominated by Marilyn & Peter Piusz
  • I am nominating Marilyn E. Piusz for the 2007 Top ARCite. Every individual who has ever worked with Marilyn will confirm that this award is absolutely appropriate and bar none, she should be the winner.

Unfortunately, you can only win once and someone before me recognized MEP’s worth and she received the Top ARCite in 1998 in Plano, Texas. But, the rules do not say that you can’t be nominated and recognized for the work you have done over the past year. So, again I nominate Marilyn for the hundreds of hours she spends making sure that awards are given, memberships are counted, money is sent to Treasurer and records are kept for posterity.
    Nominated by Diane Garnett

The recipient of the 2007 Top ARCite Award is Diane Garnett.

2007 Friend of The Rottweiler Award: Nominations & Result

This award is for the person or group who has done the most for the Rottweiler breed in the United States in the past year (2007). This award will be won only once by an individual (exception is if the individual had/or will receive the award as part of a committee or group).

Past recipients include: Muriel Freeman; Doris Baldwin; Bruce Billings; Revera “Vee” Wayburn; Nicki Giesy & Betty Gerber; Judy Beaupre; ARC Herding Committe (Tricia Millsap, Carol Krickeberg, James Hoyt, Mid Rothrock & Roger Myer); Jeanette Quay; Greg Benkiser; Jump Heights Committee (Mrs. Bernard Freeman, Nancy Gaffney, Mary Ann Pecen, Donna Rice, Jeff Shaver, Cathy Thompson & Emy Verkosen); Rottweiler Health Foundation Founders (Donna Rice, Revera “Vee” Wayburn, Patrice Lee & Susan Reis, DVM); Doreen LePage; Grace Acosta; Frank Nelson; Ron & Teri MacArthur; Glenn Elizabeth Pollock; Geula Resnick; Junior Showmanship Committee (Lew Olson, Cindy Earich Leibert & Connie Fountain); Hurricane Katrina Rescue (Linda Stoltz & Lew Olson); ARC Legislative Committee (Leisa Boysen, Karen Brinkley, Jan Cooper, Lynn Lopez, Karen Perry & Jeff Shaver.)

Nominees Were:

  • I would like to nominate Jan Cooper as this year’s Friend of the Rottweiler recipient. Jan has worked tirelessly for our breed and her efforts have produced a website, paws4laws.com, specifically for anti-dog legislation. This website is not just for Rottweiler legislation but for all anti-canine legislation that is mushrooming all over the United States. Jan Cooper has been a friend to canines for many decades and at this time I’d like to have her efforts recognized with this nomination for 2007 Friend of the Rottweiler.
    Nominated by Diane Garnett
  • Francisco Sanguino & “Rumor”. Francisco is a Junior Handler whose Rottweiler, “Rumor”, won the 2007 AKC Award for Canine Excellence (ACE) in the field of Companion. In 2007, Francisco & “Rumor” had multiple placements in the Junior Showmanship class, including 4 Best Junior In Show, defeating 177 other juniors and earning them a #3 spot in the ARC Top 10 Juniors. As we understand it, both Francisco & “Rumor” have had troubled pasts, which together they have overcome. They also participate in therapy work. We think that Francisco & “Rumor” are deserving of this award because with their spotlighted presence, they have done a lot in showing the world what a Rottweiler can be. We know this award is intended for a person, but in this case, because they are a team we have nominated them as such.
Nominated by Marilyn & Peter Piusz
  • Dr. David Watters has been leading research for years in the fight against bone cancer in Rottweilers and more recently beginning a new landmark study, Path to Progress. He has also spearheaded the Aging Research Initiative building the first nationwide database of exceptionally old Rottweilers for the study of longevity in our breed. He has taken the time to speak at three of our National Specialties to educate our membership about his work that is so important to our breed and all dogs. His dedication to the health of our breed is vital to our ability to love our dogs through a healthy, long life. To me that is a true friend,
    Nominated by Deborah Shibley

The recipient of the 2007 Friend of The Rottweiler Award is Jan Cooper.

2007 Bruce Billings Good Sportsmanship Award: Nominations & Result

The Bruce Billings Good Sportsman Award (formerly known as Gaines Good Sportsmanship Award) honors an ARC member who has shown outstanding sportsmanship in conformation, obedience, or any type of trial activities in the past year (2007). An individual may receive this award only once.

Past recipients include: Jean Forster; William Gruenerwald; Jocko Rousseau; Catherine Thompson; Lauri Ladwig; Mid Rothrock; Art Twiss; Doris Baldwin; Mary Ann Roberts; Lorene Jones; Ed Dupont; George Daigle; Ellen & David Minturn; Karla Ebert; Sue McGinty; Steph Anderson; Janet Noble; Anthony DiCicco; Tamra M. Bojarski; Dr. Tommy Casiango.

Nominees Were:

  • Again this year, we nominate Beverly Bulson for this award. She continues to be a upbeat presence at the shows, ready with her congratulations and to help out as needed. She competes in conformation, obedience, agility, rally and carting with her Rottweiler, Tagar’s Carbon Copy V Blazin, CD, RE, CI, CST, AXP, AJP, PDII, EAC, O-OJC, CL3, TT, CGC, TDIA, who has multiple placements in the ARC Top Ten Awards over the past several years. She recently earned a RN title on her new puppy, Tagar Von Benja Moose Trax, RN. And she continues to spend time in therapy work with her Rottweilers and her Boston Terriers.
Nominated by Marilyn & Peter Piusz
  • I would like to nominate Pat Crawford for the Bruce Billings Good Sportsman Award. Pat found us while searching for a male show puppy in the summer 2005. When I first talked to Pat, she indicated that she had no experience with show dogs of any breed but was eager to get a dog she could show. During the discussion of our contract, she asked ‘what do you want me to do with this puppy?' I responded saying that our contract stipulates that if the dog is worthy we want him finished and that we would require her to put a CD on him. She said she would do that. I hoped she would do those things. My thought was that Pat being a first-time show dog owner, it might be more difficult than she anticipated and I would have my work cut out encouraging her. That was before I got to know Pat and her determination. After lengthy discussion on both sides, Pat became the proud owner of our Purple Boy, now known as Turbo.

While I have been at shows with Pat, I have been impressed with her willingness to encourage and help other competitors, her friendliness and generosity to all she meets and her genuine love of the breed. I truly believe she deserves the recognition of the Bruce Billings Good Sportsman Award. I have included Pat and Turbo’s very impressive accomplishments and breed/rescue involvement in the past year.

In 2007 Pat and Turbo compiled this list of titles: AKC Champion; Multi-BOB & BOS; CD; CDX; CGC; RA; RE; RN; TT- Temperament Test; TDI - Therapy Dog; SD – Service Dog; WETT – Water Rescue; SWETT – Water Rescue; SS – Water Dog Social Skills.

Pat is also a member in good standing of: American Rottweiler Club; United States Rottweiler Club; Texican Rottweiler Club; Therapy Dog International.

Pat volunteers at the following: Pecan Tree Rehabilitation Center; Wheeler House; Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter; Endangered Breeds Association.

Pat and Turbo have also been in the news as a Therapy Dog: Gainsville Daily Register; Endangered Breeds’ Newsletter; Therapy Dog International’s Newsletter.

Pat is involved at shows: numerous times Meet The Breed at Shows; Judges Seminar Demo Dog 3 times.
Nominated by Jan and Terry Kerrigan
  • My nomination for this year’s award is Geula Resnick. Geula is an ARC/MHRC member who resides in Denver, Colorado and spends much of her time helping individuals get started in carting. She does lots of other things, too but carting is an area that she thoroughly enjoys. Her effort to encourage and assist novice individuals with carting is exceptional. She gives her personal time, equipment and experience to help develop new carters. Her positive demeanor with dogs and humans encourages folks to return and in turn be helpful, too. It’s a win-win situation at carting with Geula; she’s encouraging to new carting people and in turn they become better ambassadors for the sport, also.
    Nominated by Diane Garnett

The recipient of the 2007 Bruce Billings Good Sportsman Award is Pat Crawford.

2006 & 2007 AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award

Last year the AKC began offering a Medallion for Member Clubs to honor an individual who has made a difference in the world of purebred dogs in the past year. We did not receive the Medallion until it was too late to present at last year’s National, so this year we are presenting both the one for 2006 and 2007.

The recipient of the first AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for 2006 is Doris Baldwin.

The recipient of the AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for 2007 is Pansy Roberts.

2007 American Rottweiler Club Heroism Award

A letter of recognition and a certificate is awarded to any Rottweiler that, in the opinion of the ARC Board of Directors, has performed an act of “heroism”.

We have 3 recipients of the award this year:

  • “Dugan”, Esmonds Sixth Sense, Wilderness Search & Rescue K9, NAPWDA Cadaver Detection Dog, owned by Lucy Newton from Bondville, Vermont. Dugan and Lucy are members of the New England K9 Search & Rescue Team.

In April, 2007, Dugan and Lucy were called out to help locate a 22 year old New Hampshire woman who was missing from her home for a day and a half. At just 18 months of age, this was Dugan's first official search and, while he was young and inexperienced, he clearly knew why he was out there and what he was looking for. Dugan's continued interest in an area convinced Lucy to move North, out of her assigned area, to where they found the young woman, unmoving, but responsive. She was hypothermic and, due to her mental status, unlikely to have done anything to get herself out of the woods or to avoid succumbing to hypothermia. Dugan, a particularly exuberant young dog, was very quiet and careful with this young girl, demonstrating the good judgment our breed should possess. It is important to note that this is all done on a volunteer basis.
  • Kena - D owned by Christina & Scott Vernier from Mount Clemens, Michigan.

Kena, a 2 year-old Rottweiler, was honored in May, 2007 by the Mount Clemens Fire Department at a ceremony at the City Hall and presented with a 2-foot long rawhide bone. It was the first time the fire department ever presented a heroism award to a four-legged creature.

On September 4, 2006, the Verniers were sound asleep when faulty wiring caused a fire that sparked heavy smoke throughout the structure. Kena-D went by the side of their bed, striking the bedside with her paws and eventually barking in an apparent effort to alert the Verniers of the danger. It worked. The Verniers rushed to the second floor of the house where Christina's mother, Laverna Oak, resided and everyone was able to safely evacuate the home without any injuries. "She knew something was wrong and she did her best to tell us," Christina said of her dog. Without this dog's quick actions, no one may have gotten out alive.
  • Vito Di Dio', NAPWDA & NCPDA Certified Utility/Narcotics Dog, was owned by Lt. J. Neal & Vanessa Goodman. Vito was trained & handled by Neal.

Vito began his service in March, 1996 at 17 months and retired in May, 2007 at 12 ½ years old. He passed away on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 Vito would have been 14 at the beginning of August. Not only did he find the bad guys, he found children also. During his years of service he had 75 narcotic searches; 50 school searches, 73 tracks, 8 building searches, 13 evidence searches, 2 crowd control, 29 apprehensions, 3 lost children, & 98 public demonstrations. He recovered 1 handgun, 1 ballistic vest, 83.9 pounds of marijuana, 6 grams of hashish, 78.2 grams of cocaine/crack, 46 grams of heroin/opium & $19,000 in U.S. currency.
