President Chaney welcomed everyone to the Board and asked Peter Piusz to give an overview to the Bd on his role as AKC Liaison.

Piusz represents the ARC as Parent Club and the Rottweilers as a breed. His goal is to keep AKC accountable and keep the Parent Club informed as to what AKC is doing and planning. Piusz presents issues from ARC to the AKC Board and works to get the issues addressed/passed. Piusz states that many Parent Clubs are facing the same types of isses ARC faces. Piusz states that many Parent Clubs are facing the same types of issues as ARC Piusz was instrumental in developing the Dock and Crop Group of Parent Club members. And, was instrumental in moving AKC to develop a set of rules for standard revisions to ensure consistency in AKC review of Parent Club requests for standard revisions.

Piusz also works as liasion for ARC members who are having individual issues with AKC by getting them in touch with the right person at AKC and following up to be sure the issue is being addressed. Piusz attends the annual Delegates meeting; the last one being June 10, 2008.

AKC recognizes ARC as the “second worst” club in AKC – members act strongly, and don’t quit.

Discussed AKC program which tried to register rescue dogs. AKC wanted Parent Clubs to confirm that the rescue dogs were purebred, which obviously can’t be done in most cases. AKC has now turned this into a volunteer program for the Parent Clubs.

Discussed Dock and Crop committee’s work in the legisative end of things. A Delegates Legislative Committee was formed and AKC Bd felt not serving any purpose and turned it into a Caucus. Piusz working to develop his own contract for ARC outside of the AKC committee.

Piusz reports that the AKC Board is divided on whether to include mixbreed registry.

President Chaney opened discussion on expanding the scope of member information to be posted on the ARC website.
Currently, Webmaster Audrey Bye, is posting approved show information that comes from the ARC Board. Chaney would like to see all types of events published that have AKC approval. Chaney has discussed with Bye her belief that it is extremely important that the Board communicates with the membership in a more ‘real time’ manner. Bye is currently developing proposal for a secure website for posting member’s only information. Director Sims commented that the Board needs to be sure to think through and communicate to Bye some possible concerns/problems with posting informaiton on the website. Director Cerena stated that there is a way to create a sign in process and log for members only and create a secure password.

President Chaney wants to get Board motions up monthly instead of every quarter and would like to give the option to members to recieve ARK on line instead of by mail, which could save thousands of dollars for the Club.

Mandatory Practices: Director Sims believes committee may be waiting to recieve next ARK to be sure they had all membership comments. Will seek update from Director Gregg.

Search and Rescue Dogs: President Chaney opened discussion about supporting our ARC members who perform Search and Rescue activities. Diane Garnett stated that ARC can use Purina money for education, health, rescue and “any other area where the ARC determines”. The ARC Education fund also provides grants of up to $1500, and the SAR handlers and dogs must perform continuing eduction to keep the dogs sharp and keep up on the latest techiques and safety precautions. Chaney stated she would like to begin this effort by showing ARC’s support for member Heddie Ledger and her SAR dog Hero GC with a $500 donation. SAR is an ongoing training program and requires travel and housing on the SAR team’s own money. Though no request for a donation has been made by Ledger or anyone, Chaney recommends that as the Parent Club we should honor her initiative.

Motion that ARC makes a donation of $500 to Heddie Leger and Hero for their continued Search and Rescuse efforts. Funds to come from the Purina Partnership fund.
Motion Jeff Shaver Second Lester Cerena
Approve GC JS LC DS JF AG KS PASSED

Director Cerena recommends that ARC set up a SAR fund. Cerena will contact Robert Shultz and Heddie Leger and Marilyn Blenz to inquire about their interest in being on a committee to develop guidelines for an SAR fund/Committee.

AKC Ballot of Lifetime Achievement Awards: Secretary Shibley reminded the Board that this ballot is not closed as yet.

2009 Sieger Show Committee Chair Selection: Secretary Shibley noted that member Steve Wolfson withdrew as Chair of the Sieger Show committee earlier this year. The Board needs to work to select another.

Eukanuba Meet the Breed Booth – Jeanette Tonini stated that she and member Jill Kessler Miller will set up and man the booth again this year. Big Thank you to both!

Eukanuba Catalog Ad – Bd agreed to use the same ad as last year and highlight our fight against Anti –Canine legislation.

Possibility to discuss with All-Breed Clubs and Breed Clubs working together on rescue and fighting anit-canine legislation: Vice President Shaver reports that he is working with member Peter Piusz to open discussions with other breed clubs about their interest in working together outside of the AKC Legislative Committee to ban together to fight anti-canine legislation.

Member Garnett discussed efforts last board was making to get other clubs to advertise Paws4Laws.com in their news letters. Discussion about asking Piusz to approach AKC to put Paws4Laws.com on AKC website. VP Shaver will follow up on this suggestion with Piusz

Member Jeanette Tonini provided an update on 2009 National - Jeanette Tonini joined and confirmed that Wednesday and Thursday are available for an ARC Sieger Show during the National if time permits to organize this event. 2009 National Host Club Board, Western Rottweiler Owners, thinks an addition of a Sieger Show is a good idea. ARC needs to get Sieger Show committee together and select a judge. Tonini is trying to get other rottweiler clubs who host Sieger shows to volunteer to work the ARC Sieger if it goes forward during the National. Discussion ensued about USRC and ARV participating and the ability to get this all done by April 2009 to have it with the National.
The Board expressed its opinion that the Sieger Show should be held at the National when the host clubs can accommodate.

2009 BOD Nominating Committee. - Discussion was held regarding the nominating committee for the 2009 Board elections.

JED offered at all Specialties: Director Karen Sims expressed her desire for ARC to offer judges education at all specialties – Sims has discussed whether ARC has this ability with Judges’ Education Chairperson Cathy Rubens and both would like to have ARC offer to have Judges’ seminar and mentorship available at all Rottweiler Specialities.

National Contract: Discussion was held in which it was determined that the Board will review the standard National Contract for possible revisions to streamline.
