ARC Junior Showmanship Program

Mission and Purpose

The primary goal of the program is to promote and encourage juniors to participate in the sport of AKC events with Rottweilers, as well as becoming active in the American Rottweiler Club.

This will be achieved through offering incentives such as, but not limited to, scholarships to help with continued education and stipends offered for the Junior Showmanship competition at the Westminster Dog Show and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Dog Show

We will remain supportive and encourage them, whenever possible, to maintain enthusiastic interest in the sport of dogs and with Rottweilers in particular.

MY EUKANUBA TRIP
by Francisco Sanguino

In order to be able to qualify for the AKC/Eukanuba show in junior showmanship, you need to have a 3.0 grade point average and 5 wins. I attained my 5th win at the 2007 ARC National Specialty in Florida.

At times, I didn’t know if I’d get my 5 wins because I was (and am) very new to dog showing. Because I turned 18 in June of 2007, I didn’t have the full year to get them. I’m so glad I didn’t give up because it was great showing in Long Beach. When I aged out, I had 10 wins.

AKC/Eukanuba was held in Long Beach, CA. I drove out there with my friend, Dana Flint and our two Rottweilers, Reese (BIS, AM/CAN. CH. Raden’s Relentless. AM/CAN. CD, RE, BH, CGC) and Rumor (Raden’s Indiscretion. AM/CAN. CD, RE, CGC, RTD). It was a long drive, but a lot of fun, especially when we went through Las Vegas at night. It was gorgeous.

While we went so that I could show Reese in Junior Showmanship, we also went because my dog, Rumor, won the AKC’s ACE Award in the Exemplary Companion category. It was as much of an honor to win the award as it was to qualify for junior showmanship.

Out of 40+ juniors in my preliminary class, I made it to the top 8. I was very proud of myself to be among the final ones before the finals. It was a really nice show with lots of room for everyone. We stayed at the host hotel, so we were on site for everything.

I’m so glad that I began showing in junior showmanship because it introduced me to a sport I truly love and allowed me to meet a ton of great people.

ARC MEMORIAL JUNIOR TROPHY

Kalyn Rae Bastyr (10/5/88 - 5/8/04) earned top honors in 2002 and 2003 as the Number One ARC Junior Handler and was Number Two ARC Junior in 2001. In her honor, a new ARC memorial trophy will be presented to the top Junior Handler each year. This trophy will be funded by private donations.

The trophy is a bronze statue of a conformation Rottweiler with a young lady presenting him. The bronze will be the artistic creation of Janet Huddleson and will be mounted on a handcrafted wood base that will also display plaques engraved with each recipient's name and the year they won.
