The Rottweiler’s story begins more than 2,000 years ago, when the Roman Empire marched across Europe with herds of cattle to feed its legions. The Romans relied on strong, dependable drover dogs to keep the herds moving and to protect both animals and soldiers along the way. These early mastiff-type dogs are considered the ancestors of today’s Rottweiler. Their strength, intelligence, and steady temperament made them invaluable working companions.
When the Roman armies settled in southern Germany, particularly around the town of Rottweil, these dogs interbred with local herding dogs. Over generations, they developed into a distinct type—respected for their power, endurance, and versatility.

The Butcher’s Dog of Rottweil
By the Middle Ages, Rottweil had become a bustling market town. Local butchers and cattle traders needed dogs to drive livestock, guard money pouches tied around their necks, and protect homes and businesses. The breed became known as the “Rottweiler Metzgerhund” (Butcher’s Dog of Rottweil).
